When burner flames escape the heat exchanger and reach the switch, it opens the circuit at 180°F, shutting down the burner to prevent heat exchanger damage, carbon monoxide exposure, and potential fire. Once temperatures fall back to a safe level, the switch automatically resets — restoring normal furnace operation without requiring manual intervention.

What Is a Rollout Switch?
A flame rollout switch is a thermal safety device installed near the burner assembly of a gas furnace. Under normal operation, flames are contained within the heat exchanger. If a blockage, cracked heat exchanger, or improper combustion causes flames to “roll out” beyond the burner box, the rollout switch detects the elevated temperature and immediately cuts power to the gas valve and ignition system.
