How It Works
A thermocouple operates on the Seebeck effect — when the tip of the thermocouple is heated by the standing pilot flame, it generates a small millivoltage (25–35 mV open circuit) that signals the gas valve to remain open. If the pilot flame is extinguished, the voltage drops, causing the safety valve to close and shut off gas flow, preventing dangerous gas buildup.
