How It Works
A thermocouple is a critical safety device in standing pilot ignition systems. It generates a small millivoltage signal — in the 25–35 mV open circuit range — when heated by the pilot flame. This signal holds the gas valve open, allowing fuel to flow to the main burner. If the pilot flame is extinguished, the thermocouple cools, the millivoltage drops, and the gas valve closes automatically, preventing unburned gas from accumulating.
