How It Works
A thermocouple is a safety device that generates a small millivolt signal when its tip is heated by the standing pilot flame. This signal holds the gas valve open, allowing fuel to flow to the main burner. If the pilot flame is extinguished, the thermocouple cools, the millivolt signal drops, and the gas valve closes automatically — preventing unburned gas from accumulating.
