Description
The Lennox 52M74 is a manual reset, single-pole single-throw (SPST) rollout switch engineered to protect furnace heat exchangers and combustion chambers from the hazards of flame rollout. When abnormal burner flame rollout is detected, this safety switch trips at 320°F, immediately interrupting the control circuit and shutting down the burner to prevent equipment damage and potential fire hazards.
How It Works
Flame rollout switches are a critical safety component in gas furnaces. Under normal operation, combustion flames are contained within the heat exchanger. If blockages, cracked heat exchangers, or improper draft conditions cause flames to roll out beyond the burner compartment, the rollout switch senses the elevated temperature and opens the circuit. Because this is a manual reset switch, it requires a technician to physically reset the device after a trip — ensuring the root cause is identified and corrected before the system is returned to service.
Key Features
- Trip temperature: 320°F (160°C)
- Manual reset operation — requires technician intervention after trip event
- SPST (Single-Pole Single-Throw) contact configuration
- Designed as a direct OEM replacement for compatible Lennox furnace models
- Protects against flame rollout, heat exchanger failure, and combustion anomalies
- Helps maintain compliance with furnace safety standards
Application
- Residential and light commercial gas furnaces
- Compatible with select Lennox furnace models requiring the 52M74 rollout switch
- Ideal for service replacement and preventive maintenance programs
Why Manual Reset?
Unlike automatic reset switches, a manual reset rollout switch will not allow the furnace to restart on its own after a safety trip. This design forces a qualified HVAC technician to inspect the system, diagnose the underlying fault, and manually reset the switch — reducing the risk of repeated unsafe operation and protecting both the equipment and the occupants of the building.
