Description
Mars 19163 Potential Relay Overview
The Mars 19163 is a 163 Series Potential Relay designed to assist single-phase compressor motors with starting by dropping the start capacitor out of the circuit once the motor reaches sufficient speed. Operating at a pickup voltage of 170V, this relay ensures reliable, consistent compressor starts while protecting motor windings from overheating caused by prolonged start capacitor engagement.
How Potential Relays Work
Potential relays monitor the back-EMF (electromotive force) generated by the compressor motor’s start winding. As the motor accelerates, the voltage across the start winding rises. When it reaches the relay’s pickup voltage — 170V for the Mars 19163 — the relay opens its normally closed contacts, removing the start capacitor from the circuit. This allows the motor to run efficiently on the run capacitor alone.
