The Mars 19165 is a 165 series potential relay designed to provide dependable hard-start assistance for single-phase compressor motors in residential and light commercial HVAC/R systems. Engineered with a 332V coil pickup voltage, this potential relay works in conjunction with a start capacitor to boost starting torque, then drops the start capacitor out of the circuit once the motor reaches operating speed — protecting both the capacitor and the compressor from damage.
How Potential Relays Work
A potential relay monitors the back-EMF (electromotive force) generated by the compressor motor as it accelerates. When the motor reaches approximately 75% of its rated speed, the back-EMF rises high enough to energize the relay coil, opening the normally-closed contacts and removing the start capacitor from the circuit. This ensures a smooth, efficient start every time without overloading the start capacitor.
