Description
The Packard PR9169 is a potential (voltage) relay designed to assist single-phase hermetic and semi-hermetic compressors in achieving a fast, reliable start. Featuring a 332V coil pickup voltage, this relay works in conjunction with a start capacitor to boost starting torque, then drops the capacitor out of the circuit once the compressor motor reaches operating speed — protecting both the capacitor and the motor windings from prolonged start current.
How It Works
Potential relays sense the back-EMF (counter electromotive force) generated by the compressor’s start winding as the motor accelerates. When the back-EMF reaches the relay’s pickup voltage (332V), the normally-closed contacts open and remove the start capacitor from the circuit. This precise switching action ensures a smooth, efficient start every time.
Key Features
- 332V coil pickup voltage for accurate start-winding sensing
- Normally-closed contact design — opens on motor acceleration
- Compatible with single-phase hermetic compressor applications
- Compact, industry-standard form factor for easy installation
- Designed for use with external start capacitors in hard-start applications
- Packard quality construction for long service life in demanding HVAC/R environments
Typical Applications
- Residential and light commercial air conditioning compressors
- Heat pump compressors requiring hard-start assistance
- Refrigeration compressors with single-phase motors
- Replacement of failed or weak OEM potential relays
Installation Notes
Always verify the coil voltage rating matches the back-EMF specification of the compressor being serviced. Consult the compressor nameplate or manufacturer’s data sheet to confirm compatibility before installation. Disconnect all power before servicing electrical components.
