Description
Overview
The Rheem-Ruud 42-106242-02 is an OEM replacement pressure switch designed for use in Rheem and Ruud gas furnaces. Rated at -.40″ W.C. (negative 0.40 inches water column), this switch monitors the negative pressure generated by the draft inducer motor to verify proper venting before allowing the ignition sequence to proceed — a critical safety function in modern induced-draft and condensing furnace designs.
How It Works
The pressure switch is a normally open (NO) safety device that closes when the draft inducer creates sufficient negative pressure in the flue system. If the required pressure differential is not achieved — due to a blocked flue, failed inducer motor, or restricted vent — the switch remains open, preventing the gas valve from energizing and protecting against unsafe combustion conditions.
Key Features
- OEM Rheem-Ruud replacement part — direct fit, no modifications required
- Setpoint: -.40″ W.C. (negative 0.40 inches water column)
- Designed for induced-draft and condensing gas furnace applications
- Monitors draft inducer operation to ensure safe ignition sequencing
- Normally open configuration — closes on sufficient negative pressure
- Helps prevent unsafe furnace operation due to venting failures
- Built to Rheem-Ruud OEM quality and performance standards
Application
- Compatible with select Rheem and Ruud gas furnace models
- Verify compatibility with your specific furnace model number before ordering
- Replaces failed or out-of-spec pressure switches causing lockout or no-heat conditions
Installation Notes
Always verify the correct setpoint and port configuration before installation. Inspect the rubber hose connecting the pressure switch to the inducer housing for cracks or blockages, as a compromised hose is a common cause of pressure switch failure. Consult the furnace service manual for wiring and mounting specifications.
