Description
The Supco 9065 is a potential relay engineered for dependable single-phase compressor motor starting in residential and light commercial HVAC and refrigeration systems. Potential relays — also known as voltage relays or start relays — monitor the back-EMF (electromotive force) voltage generated across the start winding as the compressor motor accelerates. Once the motor reaches approximately 75% of its rated speed, the relay drops the start capacitor out of the circuit, protecting both the capacitor and the motor from overload.
How It Works
During startup, the start capacitor remains in the circuit to provide the additional torque needed to bring the compressor motor up to speed. As the motor accelerates, the voltage across the start winding rises. When this voltage reaches the relay’s pickup voltage of 332V, the relay coil energizes and opens the normally closed contacts, removing the start capacitor from the circuit. This smooth, automatic transition extends the life of the start capacitor and the compressor.
