The Mars 19551 is a pump potential relay engineered to assist single-phase compressor motors during startup. Designed for 244/270V applications, this potential relay monitors the back-EMF (electromotive force) generated by the start winding and opens the start capacitor circuit at the correct moment — protecting the motor and ensuring smooth, reliable compressor operation cycle after cycle.
How a Pump Potential Relay Works
Potential relays are used in conjunction with start capacitors to provide the extra torque needed to bring a compressor motor up to operating speed. Once the motor reaches approximately 75–80% of its rated speed, the rising voltage across the start winding energizes the relay coil, opening the normally closed contacts and removing the start capacitor from the circuit. This prevents overheating and extends the life of both the capacitor and the compressor.
